The James H. Smith scrapbooks consist of six volumes containing newspaper clippings from 1923 through 1936. Primarily the small clippings and articles highlight his service with the United States Army Recruiting Service by providing information on the enlistees Smith recruited. James H. Smith (1897-1952) joined the United States Army in 1914 and served under General Pershing in the Mexican Campaign in 1916. He fought with the United States Army in France during World War I and received the Purple Heart and Silver Star for combat action and critical injuries sustained in July 1918 at the Battle of Chateau-Thierry. After reenlisting with the U.S. Army after WWI as a recrutier, he became chief recruiting coordinator of Western Pennsylvania, Northern West Virginia, ...
